Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Specialisations)

Course Code: C1085

The course provides teachers and school leaders with the opportunity to extend their professional learning by studying three units in a specific area of interest. The specialisations have been developed around current educational issues. The course is designed so that participants can relate their study to their own workplace and professional development, and with another three units complete a Master of Education.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education is available in the following areas of specialisations:

Innovation for Teaching and Learning
Teaching for Social Justice
Curriculum Leadership and Innovation
Service Learning
Adult Learning
Contemporary Education

Leadership and Policy provides practising and aspiring leaders with a contemporary perspective on leadership theory and practice within the local, national and international educational policy context. The units offer a broad research base in both leadership and policy in changing social and political settings, with opportunities for applications to current workplaces.

Innovation for Teaching and Learning provides professional learning opportunities for educators to examine innovative teaching and learning practices that use collaborative learning and/or technologies to engage students. Participants may further focus on motivation, mentoring, creativity, social and emotional aspects of learning, technologies for learning, e-learning or collaborative teaching.

Teaching for Social Justice specifically addresses the concerns of teachers and other education professionals who are committed to improving the educational outcomes of students who are served least well by schooling. A variety of content units are available depending on areas of interest. The course provides an opportunity to critically reflect on issues of race and racism, ethnicity and culture, gender and discrimination, social class and poverty, prejudice and stereotyping, power and powerlessness, and encourages participants to engage in critically reflective professional practice. Through practical activities, discussion of relevant research and collegial exchange, participants will further enhance their ability to engage productively with students, schools and communities.

Curriculum Leadership and Innovation provides professional learning opportunities for teachers, school leaders, and others interested in understanding and engaging in curriculum leadership and innovation. Participants will be able to focus on curriculum areas of their choice.

Service Learning provides professional development or learning opportunities for Community Service Program co-ordinators and others involved in service learning or community learning programs for children and young people.

Adult Learning provides practitioners engaged in the education of adults with professional learning opportunities designed around their specific practice context.

Contemporary Education provides professional learning in contemporary education that participants can tailor to their own professional needs through selection of unit combinations.

Employment Prospects:This course is a specialised qualification for teachers and school leaders.
Exemption from Postgrad Course Regulations:In this course, where appropriate, undergraduate units (between 100- and 400-level) have been included to meet the learning outcomes for the entire course. Postgraduate students can expect to be part of a learning community with undergraduate students in these units. This course has been granted a specific exemption from the Postgraduate Coursework Regulations.
