| Employment Prospects: | Employment prospects are strong for graduates who are unrestricted in the location in which they wish to teach, i.e. graduates wishing to teach in rural and remote locations have high employment prospects with prospects more limited in metropolitan schools but generally strong overall. |
| Special Requirements: | The Department of Education and Training and cooperating non-government schools have the right to determine 'fit and proper persons' to enter and practice in schools. Therefore, a current Department of Education and Training Criminal Record check is required. Under the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004, compulsory criminal record checks are required for people working with children. These checks are a national check to identify those who have a criminal history which indicates they may harm children. The appropriate application form is available from the School Experience Office or the Department of Education web page. Federal and state police clearances obtained through police stations are not acceptable. Students should refer to the Study at Murdoch section of this Handbook for details on this important matter.
Not all required units in these majors are offered completely externally. Some are offered as short-term sessions on-campus or in Perth metropolitan schools. External students must undertake the first School Experience unit in a Perth metropolitan school and under the guidance of a Murdoch University Supervisor. Subject to satisfactory completion of this unit, students may negotiate with the School Experience Office to complete their subsequent school experience elsewhere.
Professional Internship units form an integral part of all Murdoch University initial teaching qualifications. For this reason the University coordinates Professional Internship placement into schools which meet the requirements of a general teaching experience. All Professional Internship unit placements must meet this requirement. |
