The Bachelor of Education (BEd) [Early Childhood and Primary] will prepare graduates to teach in any primary classroom from kindergarten to Year 7. Students will study general primary curriculum as well as that specific to early childhood teaching and will be placed in both early childhood and general classrooms for their school experiences. Primary Teacher Education graduates are qualified to teach from Years 1 to 7 in primary schools. Minors are available for primary teachers in Special Needs Education and Science Communication (quotas apply to some minors in this course - see the descriptions of the minors). Secondary Teacher Education graduates are qualified to teach one or more subjects at the secondary school level. For Secondary Teacher Education students the Bachelor's degree studied concurrently with the Bachelor of Education should be relevant to one of the following learning areas in secondary schools: English, Drama, Media, Society and Environment, Science, Mathematics, Languages Other Than English (LOTE); English as a Second Language (ESL). Advice about Murdoch majors suitable for each of these learning areas may be obtained from the Program Chair (Secondary). Students who already have a non-education bachelor degree can complete the Bachelor of Education (Primary) Graduate or the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Graduate in a minimum of two years full-time or part-time equivalent: see that course description for the specific requirements. Alternative Entry Pathway (Rockingham campus): An alternative entry pathway exists via the Primary Teaching Combination from Challenger TAFE (Rockingham) to Murdoch University Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching). This pathway will provide applicants with advanced standing once they enter the University.

| Employment Prospects: | A recent survey of all Murdoch teacher education graduates for the past decade showed that almost all were employed in teaching within a year of graduating. Murdoch graduates are employed in government and non-government schools and other education-related occupations. |
| Special Requirements: | The Department of Education and Training and cooperating non-government schools have the right to determine 'fit and proper persons' to enter and practice in schools. Therefore, a current Department of Education and Training Criminal Record check is required. Refer to the Study at Murdoch section of this Handbook for details on this important matter. Under the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004, compulsory criminal record checks are required for people working with children. These checks are a national check to identify those who have a criminal history which indicates they may harm children. The appropriate application form is available from the School Experience Office or the Department of Education web page. Federal and state police clearances obtained through police stations are not acceptable. |
