Writing at university: Structuring an essay
All essays usually include:
- An introduction outlining your topic thesis (your main idea) and a brief summary of how you’re going to present your argument.
- A sequence of paragraphs that has clear topic sentences, with each paragraph leading smoothly to the next and all the while building towards a conclusion
- A conclusion that should successfully bring together all the various strains of your argument.
